But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times. (Micah 5:2) [This was written over 700 years before the birth of Jesus.]
So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them. (Luke 2:4-7)
Jesus’ birth was written about over 700 years before he was born. During those years, many awaiting the Messiah’s arrival were born, lived, and then died. I wonder if they wished God hadn’t abandoned them. I wonder if they wished God had kept his promise. I wonder if they wished God had hurried. Of course (we know now) they had not been abandoned, lied to, or kept waiting.
This time of year is the perfect time to help explain to children that God is faithful. He makes and keeps his promises even if we aren’t the ones that get to experience them first hand. As Christmas day approaches, take the many opportunities you’ll have to explain the need to be patient (like waiting to open presents) and wait on God’s perfect timing.
