Song of the Week: Aerosmith's "Dream On"

Joe the Plumber, move over for Joe the Guitarist. According to the Boston Herald, Joe Perry of Aerosmith is backing John McCain. "I’ve been a hardcore Republican my whole life," he told the Herald. "My mother and father drilled into me from the very start that if you work hard and be positive, you’ll get what you’re working for. I guess I’m living proof of that."

McCain trails in the polls, but Perry says, "I’m an optimist. It ain’t over till its over. I think that he’s got a chance."

With that, I think "Dream On" needs to be the election-week "Song of the Week." As in, "McCain still has a chance? Dream on." I'd like to see him win to protect the fragile gains in building a culture of life--and because a Palin vice-presidency would annoy all the right celebrities. But if the polls can be believed, it's time to get used to saying "President-elect Obama."

Then again, "Dream On" is about holding on to your dreams against all odds, and maybe Tuesday night will surprise even me?

So, way back to 1976*, here's "Dream On"--

Everytime that I look in the mirror
All these lines on my face gettin clearer
The past is gone
It went by like dust to dawn
Isnt that the way
Everybodys got their dues in life to pay

I know nobody knows
Where it comes and where it goes
I know its everybodys sin
You got to lose to know how to win

Half my life is in books written pages
Live and learn from fools and from sages
You know its true
All the things come back to you

Sing with me, sing for the years
Sing for the laughter, sing for the tears
Sing with me, if its just for today
Maybe tomorrow the good Lord will take you away
(x2)

Dream on, dream on
Dream yourself a dream come true
Dream on, dream on
Dream until your dream come true
Dream on, dream on, dream on...

Sing with me, sing for the years
Sing for the laughter and sing for the tears
Sing with me, if its just for today
Maybe tomorrow the good Lord will take you away
*The song was recorded in 1973, but hit the big time when re-released in 1976
